We are delighted to welcome international students to Otago Aviation Academy (OAA), where your journey towards a rewarding career in aviation begins. Located in the breathtaking region of Wanaka, New Zealand, our academy offers a unique and inspiring environment for learning to fly. Our mission is to provide world-class aviation training while ensuring a supportive and enriching experience for our international students.


Programs Offered to International Students

New Zealand Diploma in Aviation (Flight Instruction) (Level 6) with strand in Aeroplane: This 295-credit program focuses on training you to become a flight instructor.

New Zealand Diploma in Aviation (General Aviation) (Level 5) with strand in Aeroplane: This 240-credit program prepares you for a career in commercial aviation.


Entry Requirements for International Students

Insurance: Provide evidence of travel and medical insurance for the duration of your stay in New Zealand.

Age: Must be at least 18 years old by the first day of the course.

English Proficiency: Demonstrate English language proficiency (IELTS requirement of 5.5 across all bands or equivalent).

Medical Examination: Obtain a Class 1 Aviation Medical Certificate. This can be done in New Zealand or with approved doctors overseas.

Visa: Hold a valid international study visa.


Support Services

Visa Requirements

International students must obtain a student visa to study in New Zealand. The New Zealand immigration website provides comprehensive information on visa options: NZ Immigration. Fees paid will be refunded in full if you fail to obtain a visa.

Living Expenses

As part of your student visa application, you must demonstrate that you can cover your living expenses while studying. This includes having at least $20,000 for the first year or $1,667 per month for shorter courses. For more details on living costs, visit Study in New Zealand.

Insurance

You must have travel and medical insurance for the entire duration of your stay in New Zealand. Insurance policies must cover flying activities and travel to and from New Zealand. For more information on suitable insurance options, visit Study with New Zealand.

Accommodation

OAA offers assistance in arranging accommodation for your initial stay. Options include boarding rooms in local homes, self-contained cabins in holiday parks, or local motels. You can also arrange your own accommodation. For guidance, contact our Office Manager at info@otagoaviation.ac.nz.

Orientation and Support

Upon arrival, a member of OAA staff will pick you up from Queenstown Airport and help you settle into your accommodation. Orientation will cover essential information about your course, health and safety practices, and support services available to you.

Driving in New Zealand

If you plan to drive in New Zealand, you need a valid New Zealand or international driver’s license. Familiarize yourself with local driving regulations by visiting the NZ Transport Agency.
